Google Gears: Hmm

Working with Google Docs disconnected from the Internet (online)

In a post a few months ago, I wrote that Google Docs - namely Google package with word processor, spreadsheet and presentations -,
allow different ways of working documents . The usual way
Google Docs is working while you are connected to the Internet, Google Docs and applications with different types of documents (text, spreadsheet, presentation, etc..) Saved every few minutes on Google's servers. The unusually
is to work with the computer disconnected from the Internet.

Until March 3, 2010 there were two ways to work with Google Docs disconnected from Internet.

First method (to work on documents when you're disconnected from the Internet)

Download (download) from the Internet a copy of the document in a format available. Then edit the document on your computer with one of the applications you have. Finally, when you come to connect, load (upload) the file in your web space and return to work as usual.
Take the case that you have a text document called Pippo, created with Google Docs and saved to your space on Google's servers. Open Goofy. Then choose File> Download as and finally select one of the formats available:
  • OpenOffice
  • Microsoft Word HTML (zipped)
  • PDF (Portable Document Format, can be modified only with Adobe Acrobat)
  • RTF (Rich Text Format, an old but still good size 'rich')
  • TXT (Plain text with no formatting)
Downloaded the file to your computer, using the appropriate application in that format, for example OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft Word .
Without the changes, when you reconnect to the Internet, upload the file to your space Google.
This method is robust and it works.

Second method (to work on documents when you're disconnected from interet)

Google has created an application called Google Gears (in Gears English means "gear"). Goggle Gears, once downloaded and installed on your Compuer, should allow you to work offline using Google Docs.
So said Google and so I wrote a post on this blog in February 2010.

Google Gears does not work

In March 2010 I started to try Google Gears, but the gear did not work. I tried several times but in vain. I was tired and a little 'disappointed. I promised myself to write an article on this topic on this blog.
is exactly what I do now.
Meanwhile, Google has taken action on the issue. See below.

What happened May 3, 2010?

On May 3, 2010 Google has announced the decommissioning of Google Gears, that is, offline access to Google Docs. Since then you can not access Google Docs while you are disconnected from the Internet.

How will I know when it will be reactivated offline access to Google Docs?

Goggle says it is working hard to resolve the problem. To keep you informed of developments, regular consultations, in English, the Blog of Google Apps.

Disable

A Google Gears-enabled Google Gears hold that has caused problems with the use, as usual, Google Docs. Therefore it is best to disable Google Gears as follows:
  1. Offline Click the link in the upper right corner of your list of documents
  2. dialog box that appears, click the button Reset my offline access
